Whether you’re new to the HIV community or new to the University of Arizona Petersen HIV Clinics, we’re here to help. We’ve assembled answers to the most common HIV questions. If you can’t find the answer here, please contact your clinical coordinator or medical case manager at 520-626-8598.
When can I take PEP?
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is highly effective at preventing HIV infection from sex and needle-sharing when taken within 72 hours of exposure. Every hour counts, so contact our PEP team at 520-609-1219 right away if you have an exposure.
When should I get tested for HIV?
HIV can show up on a fourth-generation test as soon as 10 days post-exposure. Always ask what type of HIV test your provider uses.
Is PrEP right for me?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an HIV prevention strategy for people who are at risk for HIV exposure, including men who have sex with men, transgender women, people who are sexually active with more than one person, and people who share needles.
How do I reach my doctor if I have questions?
If you have a nonurgent question for your HIV care provider, you may call the clinic during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at 520-626-8598. You will be asked to leave a message, and your provider or clinical coordinator will get back to you.
If you have an urgent question after hours that cannot wait until the next business day, please call Banner – University Medical Center at 520-694-8888 and ask to leave an urgent message for your infectious disease provider.
What do I do if I need a refill for my HIV medication?
Contact your pharmacy for a refill on your medication, even if there are no refills showing. The pharmacy will contact our office for authorization.
What if I can’t afford to pay for my medical care or medicine?
Reach out to your medical case manager or clinical coordinator. This person can work with you to apply for health coverage or find programs to help you pay for medical care and your medications.
